Chuqian Li is a painter based in San Francisco. Her work explores the isolation and paradoxical freedom of navigating systems built for efficiency.
Her recent work centers around the "vessel", which took shape around a moment when she was asked to have a child for her parents' joy as if her body were merely a vessel to serve others' hopes. By stretching biomorphic shapes resembling neurons, luffas and internal organs across rigid thresholds, she questions how much freedom one can fight for in a world that values people for their utility.
